Trust me when I say this... This recipe is unbelievable and so easy to follow! I have never tasted a pie so good.
Sunny basically made the lot, apart form the mince. She made the pastry, helped add ingredients to the pan while the mince simmered and helped to cover the top and of course decorate it with hearts. What would a traditional Aussie meat pie be without hearts! And as for the crushed peas... They literally melted in your mouth. The pie was so good that Sunny ate the entire lot quite happily, without any bargaining :) I think she was excited that she made the pie with her two little hands... She wanted to do it all! I didn't care about the mess or how long the process actually took...
The most important part for me is that she shows such a great interest in helping and I want to foster that and help her take ownership of her own learning! I want her to understand that not everything has to come in a complete form from the supermarket... You can make it! I want her to see the ingredients that go into preparing a meal. I want her to taste and smell each one. I want her to become aware of healthy choices. I want her to develop a love and appreciation of fresh food. Home grown produce where possible. I want her to see that through our hard work, we can feed our tummies with healthy food and that meal times not only nourish our bodies but the social aspect of sharing our meals with family and friends also nourishes the soul.

This recipe originates from The Junior MasterChef Australia Cookbook (Vol 1). I bought it with someone else in mind but have found it hard to part with it! The recipes look so delicious and full of flavour but the best part is that they are so simple with no ridiculous methods to follow. All I had to do was read the ingredients list and the method and Sunny was able to fetch what was needed and follow the steps. I think this copy will be staying with me and I'll have to buy another to send to its intended owner. If you do cooking in the kitchen with your children I highly recommend this book for its simplicity and great variety of meals that you'll actually enjoy!
Do you believe in the value of teaching children the importance of good/healthy food?

Wow! The pie looks amazing! Sunny did a fantastic job, love the heart detail. xo
ReplyDeleteToo cute. What's on the menu next week? I'm sure Skippy well be a keen eater once he masters the skill of chomping down food with his 6 teeth (and counting)!
